Squealing pig attends "Foundation First" clinic

The Northeast Mountain Horse Club hosted Robert Lawson's "Foundation First" clinic on March 15th in Milford, NJ. The day started with explanation, description and purpose of different bits. Lawson encouraged audience participation and the auditors for the day took him at his word. An hour later we concluded we were ready to move on to the round pen. Lawson worked three different mountain horses using his "Foundation First" techniques. Demonstrating to the group how a good solid foundation benefits the horse and the rider whether they are young or old, green or well seasoned. The three year old, "Thunder" proved to need a little extra help which was just what was needed for the afternoon session "How to overcome obstacles found on the trail".

After lunch, Lawson worked "Thunder" in and around water, a moving ATV, two honking geese and one poor squealing pig which was scared to death of the horse. "Thunder" started out very afraid of the pig, but after several minutes he wanted to play tag with him. This was very entertaining for everyone (except the pig). Lawson also demonstrated how to teach the horse to willingly trailer load without the handler entering the trailer. At first "Thunder" wouldn't even step on the ramp and after a few more than several minutes he was practically jumping in the trailer.

Everyone expressed how much they enjoyed the entire clinic and how much usable information they obtained. Many were anxious to head home and start applying the concept of training the mind of the horses and the body will follow.

The Northeast Mountain Horse Club expresses their thanks to The Alexandria Equestrian Association for their participation and for the use of their facility. Thanks also to Mike and Barb Nolan for their assistance. We hope Mike got the piggy home safely.

The Northeast Club will host its next clinic on May 31st at the Diamond 7 Ranch and Arena in Dillsburg, PA. Please visit www.northeastmountainhorseclub.com  for more information. Written by Karen Maier UMH Regional Representative.
