Winning Edge Clinic Re-Cap
On Saturday, April 11th the Pennsylvania Pleasure Walking Horse Assc. and The Northeast Mountain Horse Club held a schooling show / clinic at the Mountain Springs Arena in Shartlesville, Pa. The clinic was a huge success with Dale Seidel as the clinician. There were ten mountain horses and five walking horses in attendance. The show started around 9:00 am and lasted till around lunch, when everyone broke for a bite at Nans Country Kitchen located on the showgrounds. After lunch everyone filed back to the arena for a lecture on DQP, shoeing, and the new rules and regs. in order to be Legal in the show ring. This speech was respectfully given by Jeff Smith. Elissa Dauberman and Mary Ellen Hoffman discussed proper show attire. Elissa discussing English with Annette Donley as model, and Mary Ellen discussing what is proper for Western wear. The clinic wrapped up with Dale giving One on One attention to each horse/rider’s individual needs. Some worked on consistency, while others worked on their canter. It was a very fun, educational and rewarding day for all who attended. New friends were made and old friends gathered to have a good time with their horses. At the end of the day we all headed down the road to The Blue Mountain Restaurant for a nice meal and good conversation with our new friends.
I would like to take a moment to thank everyone who took time to put the whole clinic together. Dale and Nina Siedel, Annette Donley, Karen Maier, Jeff Smith, Elissa Dauberman, and Mary Ellen Hoffman, we had a wonderful day and we thank you all.
Wishing everyone a safe and happy show season.
Melissa Strause and Charles Bicksler

Click for a larger imageScott Koehler did an outstanding clinic about horse dentistry. He explained about the importance of properly taking care of our horse’s teeth, what ages they get teeth and lose teeth and why it is so important to have the wolf teeth removed. Scott had a complete horse scull to show us exactly which teeth were which. He explained all the tools and what they are used for. Then we got out Dell, our demonstrator horse. We thank club member Kevin Smith of Parkton, MD for allowing us to use his horse. Dell needed her teeth floated and had wolf teeth that needed removed. We brought Dell up to the pavilion where Scott placed a full mouth speculum on her and we all got to feel in her mouth where the edges were sharp. (This causes pain to the cheek and tongue). Scott Click for a larger image then "floated" her and we all had an opportunity to feel her teeth again. What a difference! I cannot believe anyone with this knowledge would not have their horses teeth floated at least once a year, which is the recommended time frame for horses over the age of four. Prior to four, every six months is the recommended schedule. Scott explained how the teeth come in and that some teeth come in as baby teeth and get replaced with permanent teeth. Then others come in as permanent teeth. Scott then removed Dell’s wolf teeth. Amazing...  right there in front of us with no problem and I might add, no sedation.

A huge Thank You to Scott for giving us this outstanding demonstration. If you are in need of an equine dentist, please give Scott a call 717-235-8944 or 717-578-0081.
